Basic Principles in Car Modification

Although we are not fond of modifying cars, the subject has a technical aspect that necessitated us to delve into the secrets and secrets of correct modification and provide advice to anyone who wants to do a project to modify his/her car. In the beginning, there are two types of modification that must be distinguished between them, the first type is the formal modification, which is limited to modifying the appearance of the car for the better, and this type we will not talk about in our subject being. The performance of the car does not usually improve or it often negatively affects, and because this type falls under the personal taste of every car owner, we chose not to delve into it.

The other type of modification is a technical modification, that is, modifications to the main parts of the car in order to raise its performance and efficiency while on the roads or on the tracks, and this is the crux of the matter. Many of us intend to start modifying his car, but he does not know where to start, and some have started to modify his car, but wrongly, that is, he focused on things and neglected other things so that this negatively affected his car. And here we will show the main steps for modifying the car properly, in next steps

The first step: tires and wheels

The first part that must be modified is the point of contact between the car and the road, and by that we mean the tires, and once a better type of tire is installed, the grip will increase on the bends and you can subsequently enter the corners  with greater confidence and at a higher speed.

As is the case with tires, the wheels also have a role in improving performance, and the smaller the weight of the wheel, the better the handling and balance, and the overall weight of the car will decrease. However, you must choose the appropriate size for the wheels to match the engine power, vehicle height, and the space allocated for it within the wheel arches.

The circumference of the tire and the overall wheel must be adhered to, and if the standard tire size for the car is 15 inches, for example, it is not recommended to increase the new wheel size to 17 inches (only two inches difference), and in contrast, tires should be used with a thinner edge to reach a total circumference similar to the original circumference. It should also be noted that the vehicle will lose a portion of ride comfort due to the use of narrow-rim tires.

Modifying the wheels and tires has a great impact on improving the performance of  the car, and an aesthetic role as well, so experts agree that it is the first step that must be taken.

The second step: the suspension system

The base of the car plays a big role in its behavior, especially when cornering, but adjusting the base  (or body or chassis) is very difficult and expensive, so the suspension system (the link between the base and wheels)is the second-best modification to improve performance and withstand additional forces resulting  from later modifications.

The matter is based on the installation of sport dampers or shock absorbers (they may be adjustable in height or fixed according to the available budget), and the installation of tough sports springs that keep the wheels attached to the road and prevent the body from diving and swaying in sharp bends. It is important to note that the tire and wheel balance must be properly reset.

Anti-roll bars can also be installed  in the front and rear, as they transfer forces from side to side to distribution the load on both sides of the car in fast bends, thereby keeping the center of gravity of the body in the middle, improving grip.

Step three: hardness adjustments and weight loss

One of the important and inexpensive modifications is related to reducing the weight of the car, by getting rid of unnecessary details such as the spare wheel, rear seats, carpet, recorder or door linings.

Increasing the rigidity of the structure is another important point because the structure is torsional because it is composed of  metal parts that are interconnected either with welding points or with anchor points (screws), and the increase in the torsion of the structure negatively affects the cohesive of  the car, and therefore it is good to install additional columns to increase the stiffness of the structure stiffness bars.

Fourth step: the brakes

The quality of the sporty wheels, the sports suspension system and the weight reduction contribute to reducing the

braking distance, but when it comes to increasing the engines power, the first thing that must be ascertained is the ability of the brakes to stop the car while it is traveling at high speeds, and that its performance does not diminish with repeated use.

The brakes should be made of durable materials, and the use of a large brake cylinder reduces heat, which negatively

affects the performance of the brakes. The brake calipers evenly distribute the brake force.

Fifth step: the transmission system

The penultimate step is to modify the components of the transmission system, as increasing the engines  power may lead to damage to the components of the transmission  system early, or its inability to deliver power from the engines to the wheels properly, which leads to its waste or wrong distribution and loss of vehicle cohesion.

Transmission adjustment begins with the installation of a sporty interconnect, gearbox, and differentials. And if you have a large budget, in some cases, it can be changed to a four-wheel-drive from two or vice versa, or a switch from front-wheel-drive to rear-wheel drive.

Sixth step: the engine and its accessories

Up to this point, we have not touched the car engine, despite that, we have gotten a great improvement in the cars performance, speed, and stability on the road, and now we have reached the point where the car appears ready to receive more power.

This point needs books and volumes to be denied. But we will arrange the most important things that can be modified from the simplest (and cheapest) until we get to the comprehensive modification of the car's power source.

1.ENGINE ATTACHMENTS

Air filter: One of the simplest and inexpensive modifications is to install a good quality air filter that delivers more air into the engine, thus providing better breathing for the engine. The increase in strength is slight (at best 5%).

Incorrectly installing the filter results in a loss of power rather than an increase, so care must be taken to isolate the filter from the perimeter of the engine compartment.

2.EXHAUST

The exhaust system is an attachment to the engine and is not an independent system, so it is an effective part.

of increasing (or decreasing) the engine's power. A sporty exhaust passes the gases leaving the engine faster and smoother, and thus improve engine breathing the same as an air filter. Likewise, the design of the exhaust manifold affects the flow of the outgoing gases, and the sports exhaust drums do not have many dampers and hence their sounds are louder.

3. COOLING SYSTEM

Increasing engine power is accompanied by greater heat release. The cooling system must deal with it quickly in order to avoid the engine from overheating and thus damage. Therefore, the efficiency of the cooling system must be calculated by either installing cooling fans to push a larger air volume, enlarging the radiator, changing the temperature valve (thermostat), and enlarging the sizes of the coolant hoses.

And now we will review the most important things that can be modified to increase engine power

1. Installing an engine control unit with mathematical programming: Programming the control unit to obtain a suitable fuel and air mixture will increase combustion efficiency and thus increase power

2. Modifying the fuel injection system: Installing aerosols that can pump a larger amount of fuel leads to an increase in power.

3. Installing of sports parts for the ignition system: the installation of sports spark plugs and excellent connections contributes to the delivery of the spark into the combustion chamber at the right time and in the right quantity, which increases the efficiency of combustion, especially at high rotational speeds.

4.Increasing the amount of the fuel mixture entering the engines can be done in two ways, either by installing a supercharger or by installing a turbocharger.

In addition to the above points, consideration must be given to changing some parts of the engine to suit the higher pressures resulting from the increase in force, the most important of which are pistons, valves, camshafts, crankshafts, flywheel, and isolation rings, in addition to replacing the fuel pump with a higher pressure one and an oil pump capable of timely delivery of oil to all engine parts.

Step seven: smooth adjustments

The final step in modifying the car is to add aerodynamics appendages that help reduce lift and increase downforce. The airflow around the car has a very big impact on its stability, and increasing the car's speed also means increasing the air resistance. Therefore, the shape of the car must be modified to allow the body to pass through the air with the least possible resistance, and this is not easy at all. Where the car must be placed in an air tunnel to ensure the effectiveness of these addictives.
